I Want You Gone
So that’s how you deal with a special needs child? I should have had someone like Ms. Portillo as a mentor when I was working with kids so I’d know how to educate special needs children.
I was under the impression that you provide a personal, individualized education plan for the child and show them that you truly care about them and their success. You let them know that they are both truly special and just like any other kid. You tell them to believe in themselves because you believe in them and you never let them forget it.
Boy, was I wrong.
According to the Portillo Model, you’re supposed to stand the child in front of the class and allow them to be ridiculed by their peers. A vote should then be taken to determine if the child is deemed worthy to remain in the class.
No wonder I didn’t become a teacher.
I have so much to learn.

That has to be one of the most heartbreaking things I’ve ever heard. It’s so sad that a teacher would initiate something like that, teaching children how to be bullies. This is why children grow up learning to judge and hate people who are different. This is one of the reasons I think when I have kids, they’ll be home-schooled.

One of my younger brothers has cerebral palsy and epilepsy, and he’s in a wheelchair. It’s situations like this that made me so paranoid while he was in high school, because I didn’t want him to be treated like this.
Not only has this teacher hurt this child, but she has made a sharp impression on the other children in the class. She encouraged them to say hurtful things, and I hope the parents will sit down with their kids and explain why the teacher was wrong.
It makes me wonder what else she has done or said throughout her teaching career….

You know you ever think what are these people thinking when they do the most asinine things. Some people just deserve to be fired. I cannot even believe that this woman, an African American at that could teach children as young as five that it is okay to dislike and even remove someone that is different. I do not know what this kid may do in the class but maybe she have sought administrative assistance instead of just trying to remove the child in the most hurtful way. Idiot!

Wow. As the mother of an autistic child, all I can say is there would have been charges pressed…probably against me that day when I found out what had happened to my son.

HUGE! dude, you gotta be kidding me on this. is that legal? that can’t be legal! this mother did well by not laying hands on that teacher. i got mad just listening to her tell the story! it’s way worse than that teacher that wrote “where are my glasses” on a child’s face a couple years back.
